MRI Scan Protocolling AI Tool
Benefits
The AI tool helps automate the MRI scan protocolling process, which was previously done manually by radiographers or radiologists. It has the potential to save around 300 staff hours per year, giving staff more time for patient care. The tool achieved high accuracy rates: 100% for heart scans, 99.9% for biliary system scans, and 98.2% for liver scans. Brain and spine scans showed lower but still comparable accuracy to human staff (73.6% and 79.7%).

- The project was awarded £7,618.48 through NHS Highland's Research and Development funding. It was presented at a Dragon's Den-style event in Inverness on 25 February 2025 and completed within six months. Dr. John Tracey was involved in the project. The AI tool uses a two-step approach: first categorizing the general area (brain, spine, heart, etc.) and then determining the exact scan type needed. [Source]
